Pimping My Ride
Sometimes, the very best is right around the corner. Going through an authorized channel, stripes for my Mini Cooper’s boot would have cost around $325, plus installation of $150. Then I was referred to Mike Frederick of Unique Signs in Mamaroneck, NY.
Mike is a nationally renowned customization sign artist (includes lettering) and pinstriper who can draw, paint and apply any design imaginable, from intimidating lines of flames to simple, well, boot stripes. When I called, he asked, “Do you live around here? OK, come in Saturday morning and I’ll work it in for you.”
Entering the auto studio is like entering a pristine “Cheers” for cars. The garage is immaculate and full of art for cars, and Mike’s car enthusiast friends could not have been friendlier. On display are sample after sample of Mike’s
work. When I mention the delight of having a “Pimp My Ride” studio nearby, Michael shows me the book

on the subject that he co-wrote with members of the popular TV show. The book is titled, Pro Pinstripe Technique, by Wolfgang Publications, and also credited to “East Coast Artie with the East Coast Pinstripe Police,” an insider handshake that distinguishes them within the national band of brothers.
Mike has had Unique Signs for 25 years, but has been an artist and pinstriper since he was a teenager. In under three hours, and for under $150 total, he made and applied the two decals—each white stripe is edged in black— to perfectly mimic factory-produced boot versions not available on my model.
As I was pulling out my car, a sweet Chevelle convertible was pulling in, awaiting Mike’s handiwork. “Mike’s the master,” said the owner. “I’m here to listen to Mike’s ideas and go with it.” Mike look embarrassed, saying, “Come on,” then he looked over the car and, sweeping his and along the sides of it said, “I’ve got some great ideas that will look good over here and over here,” then grabbed a pencil, reached for something to draw on and got to work.
